Working from Home: The New Home Office Design

There is no telling how these last few months during this pandemic will change how we work and more importantly where we work from. With the lovely invention of the internet we professionals have more flexibility to work from different places. Could be from your sofa one day, your patio on a nice day or maybe you are super focused and working from your dedicated home office. I have mostly worked from home for the past decade creating beautiful designs for my clients and enhancing their everyday life with personalized spaces that reflect who they are. In any space you spend a lot of time in it's important to have it feel good and function well for you.

Some of us will return or our company office, others might have some flexible office hours and some of us may be entirely working remotely. Which means you now have a new space to design for working there everyday! Things to consider in a home office, work surface, comfortable seating, storage (if needed), and of course how it makes you feel when you are in there. Does it make you happy and/or productive?

A tiny office still gets a couch - it can work!

Clutter free space is a good place to start. Think about what items you need to work at full capacity. Do you need just a laptop or do you need a printer and storage space for documents? Some people need a multi screen set up to view different documents they are references or can be multi tasking. Others like one screen to help them focus with little distraction. When making a list of what you "need" in your office to make it work for you, make sure you don't overlook smaller items that might need an accessible home, like pens or a note pad to quickly write down something from the phone call you were on.

Crafted from solid mango wood and lofted on airy steel legs, our Rustic Storage Modular Desk comes with two attached box files—store letter and legal files in the deep drawers or stash away books, magazines and other desk accessories.

A comfortable chair is key as well. You will most likely be sitting for hours so it being a good fit for your body and how you sit are important. Remember getting up every hour or so and walk around is healthy for you. Walk away for a few minutes then come back with a fresh mind can make a world of difference. I have an upholstered wide chair with arms that I can sit on a foot sometimes but I can also sit like a professional getting down to business.

Depending on what kind of work you do you may need some space for short and long term storage. Maybe you are mostly paperless and this might not apply as much to you but maybe you work in construction and have a stack of construction documents. Look at what you need other than a stack of papers on your desk, because no one likes that!

Home Edition: Workout at Home in YOUR Gym

Tired of going to the gym? Having to wait for a machine? Well there is an option! Create your very own home gym. Think about what you use the most at the gym, is it dumbbells? Treadmill? Cable Machine? Whatever it might be; be selective in your equipment. Get creative with exercises and working out at home gives you more flexibility that adjusting your workout schedule to the gym's. These are some home gyms that would make anyone want to workout! Also can save you money in the long term. So save time, money and hassle....get your pump on at home! Enjoy!

Be creative! Don't just leave your walls bare, make it feel like the rest of your home, bring in colors and textures. When it feels pleasant you will want to spend more time in there.

Like working out like you are in fight club? Make the space dark, paint the walls and ceiling dark. for some people this brings concentration to your workout and you can actually get better results.

Ahh the sun! Natural light is key for some people. And what about those beautiful days you wish you could do your gym workout outside? There is a solution for that! Sliding window/door panels. The nice breeze feels great too!

For some colors and textures are distracting...so eliminate those and go with a simple architecturally designed space. White walls, lots of natural light and a simple wood floor is the perfect backdrop for getting a clean workout in.

Don't have room for a whole gym? Use part of your home office, it can be a cable system like this one. You can do various exercises with a cable machine and this particular one looks great with the rest of the room so when you aren't working out the machine doesn't stick out like a sore thumb!

One Piece...Two Uses!

Not everyone lives a large and in-charge house and has abundant storage areas. Like me, and most of the city dwellers I know, we have limited space to keep the things we love, need and use throughout our everyday lives. I am always looking for multifunctional pieces of furniture to use in not only my own home but the homes of my clients as well. For those of you who need a little insight into the wonderful world of multi-use furniture....here you go! Enjoy!

It's a shelf....not it's a desk.... it's BOTH! This is perfect for a laptop user that doesn't really need a full blown desk.  Taking up less floor space than a traditional desk and looks pretty cool too!

Coffee Table with built in floor cushions. Brilliant! Could also store items in the middle part.

Sit. Store. Drink Wine. What a great idea for those who love wine but don't really have a giant collection or a wine cellar. And sitting in this chair means you don't even have to leave you seat to fill your glass up!

Bookshelf turned eating area!! Store anything you want in the cubbies and when you need a place to eat just pull out a chair! This is great for any small space!

Tips For Organizing Your Home: 2013

Happy New Year! As everyone plans their new year's resolutions not to eat cake or workout more but don't neglect your home from getting a new look or just a little TLC to make your new year even easier with a clutter free home! I might be a little OCD (in a good way) but January if the perfect month to begin your home organization transformation.  It's cold outside, perfect for staying inside where it is warm and easy to get things done around the house! I have begun on my home already but still have a little ways to go. Thought this would be the perfect time to share some of my ideas and tips that you can use in your own home! Enjoy!

You know those free metal hangers you get from the dry cleaners? Well there is a reason they are free.....they aren't good for your clothes, chose one kind either wood or plastic and go with it through your entire closet. One, it will more organized, and two, it will keep your clothes looking better.

An easy fix for a lack of storage in a home office wall shelves. They are inexpensive and will give you more storage than you thought was possible. Make sore to get ones sturdy enough to hold what you need to place on the shelves. Heavier items might not do as well on a floating shelf.

Use matching storage boxes to create a calm working environment. Also keeps the mess hidden and your work area looking fabulous!

Don't have a separate room for your home office? Make sure whatever room your desk is in, it blends well with the decor in that room. Use the same colors or same materials to make it feel like part of the room and not like a sad desk stuck in the corner!

Boxes are always good storage options. Why not put a picture of that box's content on the outside. This is an easy way to remember where things are with out having to use a label maker!

The Junk Drawer...everyone has one, take time to go through it and put items in there correct homes then get a few organizers for the remaining items and TADA! No more "junk drawer"!

It is cold season which means the flu is in the air! This is a great time to go through your medicines and throw out the expired ones and organize the rest! clear containers work great!

Secret Rooms....just find that secret door!

Remember all those movies with secret passages and mysterious hidden rooms....well they are becoming more and more popular in private homes today.  These are some different example to fit what ever your style is and be sure to WOW your guests.  When I build my dream home you will be sure to see one of these in there! Just don't go searching for it! Enjoy!

 A built-in? Oh wait...its a secret door!

Really nicely done. No one would ever suspect it lead to the adjacent room.

Again really nicely done.  Any style goes with these doors.

Love the stone wall!  In the right location in a house this would never be suspected as a secret door.

Traditional built-in finished nicely....then BAM! A secret room.

This is probably my favorite! Clean lines with lots of storage.....yum.....makes me want to buy some more books!

Stylish Bookshelves....Yes Please!

Everyone has books and no matter how many you have, you need somewhere to store or display them. I love growing my own book collection and if i had somewhere fashionable to display them would be even better. Here are some bookshelves that make a statement in any room. Let me know your favorite. Enjoy!

U S of A! Such a great idea.  Even leaves room for you to grow thanks to it being over sized.

Now you know your ABCs.  Fantastic idea for teaching kids to read as well as organizing the titles of each book.

This would make a great room divider.  Against a wall would look good too! doesn't take up too much space yet gives you plenty of storage.

Tree motifs are always nice,  gives a space some organic personality.  This is definitely a floor space saver, taking advantage of vertical opportunities.

This thinking bubble is too cool. Placing it behind a sofa makes for some humor for whom ever sits in front of it.

Alice in wonderland? Well maybe not but this cartoon style bookshelf is playful and has lots of character, that can be added to any room for some color or just something a little different.

Oh, If Walls Could Talk!

Well, these walls definitely can! Walls do so much more than just divide rooms- they provide the perfect opportunity for creative expression. As a graphic design aficionado, I found that these graphic walls offer a bit of flair to a whole room. Enjoy!

This wall can surely talk- and keep you organized! A chalk board wall calendar is perfect for a home office.

DANGER: Designer at work. Skulls may not be for everyone, but this pattern sure is different!

'O' so mOd! The circles on the walls of this modern bathroom add an interesting pattern to a small space without being overwhelming.

What is this wall saying? Ginormous word search party! Invite your friends, or work alone and let the letters inspire you.

This wall is a-maze-ing! My corny pun doesn't do this design any justice. Black and white is always a great combination and the irregular shapes make this a playful yet simple design.

Oh, world map upon the wall- tell me, where's the greatest place of all? Besides your home, of course! This mapa del mundo can inspire your next vacation and remind you of past travels!

Horizontal stripes make a room feel cozy, like arms are stretching out wide to give you a big, warm hug!

Make It Work!

I don’t know about you, but I find that when most people focus on working they tend to let their workspace get a little cluttered, albeit temporarily. I for one, have to stay organized. I absolutely cannot stand not having a place for every little thing. I came across a few examples I wanted to share, of how you can stay organized and keep your space from looking cold.

Don’t let small spaces go to waste! Too often we only think in two dimensions and ignore valuable vertical space. Apply matching shelving to create convenient storage and a work place.

I love the idea of integrated pieces. Why should furniture only have one use? This high gloss example includes a nicely organized work area. When you finish your work and it’s time to relax, this desk makes for easy clean up.

You can never have enough storage.  Or natural light. I like to avoid the feeling of “working” as much as possible. Remember, this space is still part of your home and it should feel comfortable. Including natural light will help keep your home office feeling like it’s still part of your home.

Another integrated desk that caught my eye (the K Workstation). I like this solution as its an efficient use of a small space. This bamboo laminated plywood desk provides storage above and a nice and tidy place to work below. I particularly enjoy the texture the bamboo grains provide.

Populating an office doesn’t need to be expensive! Even on a small budget you can have what you want and need- it’s all in the planning and execution. Most of the pictured items are from Ikea believe it or not. However you plan to make your home office space your own, don’t be afraid of new ideas.
