Small Space? Big Style!

Bigger isn't always better. Typically it is having your space be utilized more. Some ideas I like to use with potential new clients are how they live and flow through their home. Where do you enter into your home? What do you leave at the entrance? Do your items have homes as well? Do you always drop something at the same place everyday? Maybe making that item feel it belongs there is important.

These are just a few questions I like to ask when deciding how to start a design for a particular client. Maybe you don't know yet, but I'm here to help guide you through the design process as well as making your home feel less cluttered or that there is just "stuff" everywhere. Think vertical storage. Your walls are your friends and they will help you not collect things on every horizontal surface.

If you use something daily or almost daily and want to out either on displace or need to access it, then it should have a proper home. Also, if there are items you take with you every time you leave the house those items too should have a home. I'm going to show you some of my little helpers in my home.

I love blankets! I have like 5 in the living room alone but where should they go? Do they just sprawl all over the sofa or chairs? On the floor? Well I use one of them almost daily so it has a home. Somewhere I can easily get to it but also put it back as easily. As if we were kids learning to put our toys back when we are done playing with them. So these comfy blankets in my home have a basket that sits behind a chair so it appears clutter free on the sofa and chairs but I can grab a blanket anytime I need one or two. Sometimes it doesn't get folded and just in a ball on the other blankets but you cant see that behind the chair.

One of my more important places in the home is where I enter from, the garage. I have hooks and a key holder, my purse, jacket or keys have no reason to come in the house any further than that so they have a home. I always know where those items are, not in a chair or on the kitchen counter, but in their home on the wall and out of the way of everything else.

Aesthetics are important in design just like function is important too. Do you like coffee? You probably have a coffee maker that sits on your counter in the kitchen, but what about all the things that go with your coffee maker? Does the bag of coffee just sit on the counter next to it? looks like a piece of garbage waiting to be put in the trash? Well make it accessible and attractive. Get a couple decorative canisters for your coffee and sugar and whatever else you like to have in your coffee. Make it feel purposeful and if it is going to live there make it feel as if its part of the kitchen.

These are just a few ideas to make your home feel like things have a purpose and easily accessible. Do you have any good ideas for storage? Comment below!

Lake House Laundry Room Renovation -Before,During,After

One of our most recent projects was redesigning a functional laundry room for one of my favorite repeat clients. Their home is beautiful and has plenty of space but lacked the storage and functionality in a space they used frequently. After several years living with a laundry room that was missing usable storage they finally decided they had enough and it was time for an over-haul.  Now in a room, such as a laundry room,  function is everything. Thinking about how they move in the space and what order they do things; this made them really think about the layout and that is where I came in.

Here is the project- Before, During and After:

For starters, there is only one little wall cabinet. That is it for storage! And the swing door limited what you could do with the wall on the right.

For some reason the water supply and outlets were not in ideal locations. So they needed a little reworking for the new layout. Also with lack of storage, items that usually would be out of sight were just sitting on the floor.

In reaction to not having enough storage, my clients used this make-shift storage shelf be their means to store household items. Brooms and mops just hung out next to it.

The swing door prevented precious wall space from being utilized, so we had to change that!

Construction begins by moving the plumbing and electrical to the left wall and removing the wall cabinet.

Then the old tube florescent light fixture is replaced with two recessed cans.

Once all the behind the walls are done we framed out the new pocket door and relocated the light switches to the outside for easy access. This pocket door has allowed us the maximize the cabinetry in this 5'x8' room. Giving us 10' span of cabinets for plenty of storage.

Cabinet installation begins! These are 8' tall and they are full of storage space inside!

Ta Da! Tall 24" deep cabinets on either side of the washer and dryer, one with pull out drawers and the other to hold a hamper and other laundry items. A cabinet above for less used items.

On the other 5' wall we did 12" deep cabinets for smaller, frequently used items and left a space on the floor for the dog crate and have a hanging rod for drying clothes. This wall used to be where the swing door sat when door was open, now much more functional with lots of storage!

Finished the white cabinets off with hand finished brushed nickel hardware.

The pocket door made this room!

As you can see, yes this room is only 5' wide and we utilized as much space as we could. With 10' ceilings this means think vertical storage, and that is just what we did!

Spring Cleaning Tips 2013

Its about that time! Flowers start to bloom and outdoor activities are planned. But what about the inside of your home? Does it need a little sprucing up? Organize that area you have been talking about for the past 3 months? You don't have to spend a lot (or if any) to make an impact on your organization around the home! Here are some tips that can help you get inspired or perhaps make it happen sooner than you expected! Enjoy!

The number one place that people usually start with in their spring cleaning journey is the closet! It is usually the most area in need since it gets used everyday! Go through and try on everything and decide if you still like it, looks good on your or if you need to pass it along to someone else who could put it to good use. Once the items you no longer want/need are gone organize the rest and hang clothes on the same type of hangers for a cohesive look.

Messy box of wrapping materials get you stressed? Well think about hanging your ribbon spools and other accessories on a multiple pan hanger and a jewelry pouch hanger. New uses for common items!

Free storage containers!!! Made spaghetti last night? Use that jar for storing dry goods that usually come in a bag. This will keep them fresher and make better use of your pantry shelf space.

Some pantries don't come with ample storage for spices or other small food items but making use of dead wall space is perfect for small spice racks attached to the wall! Inexpensive and easy to do-it-yourself! Hooray for having everything visible and easy to find!

Picture Perfection in Your Own Home

Why do we share more pictures on the internet than we do in our own home? Let your home share your story! These wall displays make your photos cohesive so you can tell your story in a way that is just as unique as your own life. Enjoy!

No one wants a 'hole-in-the wall' place! This unique photo rack lets you display many pictures without putting more holes in the wall. Show off your sensibility and sophistication with this sleek setup.

This arrangement reminds me of mountains and their reflected image from a still lake. I love the visual line that splits the upper and lower photos in the display- it lengthens the wall in a creative and subtle way.

Mix and match! This display definitely took a lot of advice from my previous 'Mix and Match' post. Notice how the photos seem random, yet cohesive? It's important to keep even spacing between frames, otherwise this could affect the display's balance and flow.

Don't let your photos go haywire! Instead, hang them on the wire! This display allows you to easily swap photos and slide frames to keep your memories fresh and fun.

Life is one big balancing act, and it shows on your wall! Even though this wall is not covered entirely by picture frames, the panoramic photos maintain balanced by symmetry. Again, I love the classic nostalgia that black and white photos give!

Keep your photos in line! This display is simple yet sophisticated. The clean lines offer order while the black and white photographs portray timeless charm and class.

Tips For Organizing Your Home: 2013

Happy New Year! As everyone plans their new year's resolutions not to eat cake or workout more but don't neglect your home from getting a new look or just a little TLC to make your new year even easier with a clutter free home! I might be a little OCD (in a good way) but January if the perfect month to begin your home organization transformation.  It's cold outside, perfect for staying inside where it is warm and easy to get things done around the house! I have begun on my home already but still have a little ways to go. Thought this would be the perfect time to share some of my ideas and tips that you can use in your own home! Enjoy!

You know those free metal hangers you get from the dry cleaners? Well there is a reason they are free.....they aren't good for your clothes, chose one kind either wood or plastic and go with it through your entire closet. One, it will more organized, and two, it will keep your clothes looking better.

An easy fix for a lack of storage in a home office wall shelves. They are inexpensive and will give you more storage than you thought was possible. Make sore to get ones sturdy enough to hold what you need to place on the shelves. Heavier items might not do as well on a floating shelf.

Use matching storage boxes to create a calm working environment. Also keeps the mess hidden and your work area looking fabulous!

Don't have a separate room for your home office? Make sure whatever room your desk is in, it blends well with the decor in that room. Use the same colors or same materials to make it feel like part of the room and not like a sad desk stuck in the corner!

Boxes are always good storage options. Why not put a picture of that box's content on the outside. This is an easy way to remember where things are with out having to use a label maker!

The Junk Drawer...everyone has one, take time to go through it and put items in there correct homes then get a few organizers for the remaining items and TADA! No more "junk drawer"!

It is cold season which means the flu is in the air! This is a great time to go through your medicines and throw out the expired ones and organize the rest! clear containers work great!

No More Vicious Cycle!

All you small-space dwellers and big-time bike riders know the vicious cycle of storing your bike: you either leave it outside to weather the elements or bring it inside to crowd your home element. Neither option seems optimal, but thanks to intelligent design, we can end the vicious cycle! Now bikes can be stored in the safety of our home without sacrificing much space at all! Here are a few clever inventions that allow for safe, streamlined storage. Enjoy!

Wheels in pairs hidden under the stairs! What a perfect place to hide a bike.

The Cycloc- lock your bicycle in this handy device. Great for kids' rooms, or any room: four colors to choose from!

Simple design but great shelving for convenience for all those small bike accessories.

Bike storage got you up against a wall? Not anymore ;)

Not Your Mama's Washed-out Washroom!

Mama always said, "Life is like laundry... it's loads of fun!" Well, I'm sure no one's mama ever actually said that, let alone meant that. The laundry room may not be a fun room, but it should be a functional room! When designing a home, many people often put the laundry room in the back of their mind until it soon becomes their biggest headache. One of my current clients has suffered numerous years with laundry room headaches, but with a little inspiration, I have the ideal prescription for her. Maybe you'll find some of these examples inspirational to you, too! Enjoy!

To stack or not to stack? That is the question! Well, no matter whichever answer suits your space, know that color is the ultimate answer! Like I said, this isn't your mama's washed-out washroom- these bright blues make the laundry room seem cleaner and more exciting.

This laundry room is on double-duty!  Everything is clean and symmetrical. The splash of color on the walls and bold cabinets take this washroom from washed-out to wonderful!

The wall says it all! This patterned wallpaper offers stimulation to an otherwise non-stimulating chore: laundry. The toned-down cabinets play-up organization and efficiency, and the large window lets the sun brighten your dullest chores.

Mission: Impossible. Who would have thought that such a small space could hold so much?! The washer and dryer are streamlined perfectly into the rest of this multi-functional room's decor.

Everyday Kitchens Made Sustainable!

Whether you are doing an entire kitchen overhaul or a few smaller upgrades you should keep in mind green design.  Weather its using a recycled material or energy efficient appliances...its a change for the better! These are some great designs and all use sustainable materials. Enjoy!

Bamboo is a wonderful product. Grows fast and is durable! Mix it with stainless and this kitchen has an instant modern feel. Also, open storage has become more appealing to homeowners since you have beautiful dinnerware why not show it off all the time? Perfect.

Love this! Would you ever think this was a sustainable kitchen? Probably not and that is the beauty of it. All the function and durability of a "typical" kitchen but highly stylish!

Would you ever know walking into this kitchen that it was designed as a "green" kitchen? Well concrete floors, quartz counter top make this home be just a little greener than its neighbor. Every little bit helps!

WOOD! This is from a house mainly designed out of wood......so naturally the kitchen presents lots of wood.  People sometimes forget wood can be sustainable and there are plenty of manufactures spreading the word and making sure the right practices are in place.  Since the wood comes from the right place and new trees are planted in the old ones place, this makes a nice green designed kitchen, and the addition of concrete counters adds to the design.

Secret Rooms....just find that secret door!

Remember all those movies with secret passages and mysterious hidden rooms....well they are becoming more and more popular in private homes today.  These are some different example to fit what ever your style is and be sure to WOW your guests.  When I build my dream home you will be sure to see one of these in there! Just don't go searching for it! Enjoy!

 A built-in? Oh wait...its a secret door!

Really nicely done. No one would ever suspect it lead to the adjacent room.

Again really nicely done.  Any style goes with these doors.

Love the stone wall!  In the right location in a house this would never be suspected as a secret door.

Traditional built-in finished nicely....then BAM! A secret room.

This is probably my favorite! Clean lines with lots of storage.....yum.....makes me want to buy some more books!
