Designing Smart and Healthy Spaces: COVID19

All of us have been affected by COVID19 and before this pandemic time design requirements looked a little bit different.  Hospitals and medical settings were on the forefront of sanitizing and preventing spread of germs in interior design. That importance is spreading into everyday design for residential, office and restaurant/hospitality design. A majority of my design work is residential but occasionally a small office or hair salon make it into my design work.

Keeping surfaces clean is making its way to being top priority for everything aspect of life. This can start with interior designers doing their part when sourcing materials for projects. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) has been doing it's part in recognizing designs that take it's impact on the world seriously and making better design choices for the greater good. I am happy to see that I see more LEED residential projects each year and this is what we need as a society. Better materials, smarter design and overall less negative impact on us.

To touch on a few key points, clean-ability, durability and sourcing local have always been important in my design selections for clients. Now these will still remain important but now we add another up and coming important element in material selections, killing bacteria! There are materials out there that have anti-microbial elements to help kill and keep surfaces cleaner and less likely to spread diseases. Some materials commonly in hour home that could have a healthier option to a traditional material. Countertops, tile and paint are all good places to start when designing a kitchen or bathroom in your home.  Silestone is one of those manufacturers who design their material to help keep bacteria away and not penetrate into the surface.

Another company that takes killing germs seriously is Sherwin Williams, they have formulated a paint called paint shield that is seen mostly in hospitals for it's ability to kill surface bacteria quickly. I think we will see that product in homes more often since COVID19.

Tile is also one of those materials that can be formatted to be easier to clean and resist bacteria to grow on it's surface. Natural stone tiles isn't always the best choice as something like a porcelain might be better suited for a certain application. Interceramic is another manufacturer who is taking "green" design seriously in not only commercial spaces but applying that into residential spaces. Having safer, smarter and cleaning materials will improve our quality of life and reduce our chances of spreading germs.

Sometimes these materials might be more costly than it's less health conscious option nut in the long run your health is important and these materials with these technologies can last you longer therefore remodeling as often might not be needed. When thinking of your next design project, remember there are healthier material optinos and you should ask your designer for these if this is an important thing for you.

Color of 2013: Emerald Green

Green has always been a favorite color of mine. I have green eyes which I think was when I first fell in love with green! Although my eyes are emerald green....they are still green! :)
Rich, saturated colors are so bold and make such a statement in a space. Please are naturally drawn to eye-catching things(such as bright colors) and it stimulates the brain and makes people think! That is how I feel about interiors, in my designs I always have elements that standout on purpose! It creates more interest and keep people in that space longer usually. Well I have yet to use emerald this year in my designs but I am sure it will be used soon with all these beautiful examples of the hue! Enjoy!

Oh my! These tiles are gorgeous! A stunning use of the color, but make sure you are going to still love it for years to come. They even used the tiles in a vertical and horizontal pattern which gives it more of a modern look!

Love the color but not sure where to bring it in to your space? Well a great way is in a small accent piece, such as a nightstand. Mix it with other patterns and colors for a mixed look!

Want a quick fix for a bland room? Pillows are a great inexpensive way to bring in color. Whether you change your pillows for the season or every year or so this is a great way to keep your home looking fresh!

Paint, the other quick fix for adding color. Keeping your furniture neutral is a great way to add accents elsewhere in the room. Like the wall for instance, and a can of paint makes a statement and is easy on the wallet!

Bathrooms look great in white but sometimes white can be lonely, which is why a friend is nice to bring in.  Here the emerald is paired nicely with the crisp white on the walls and a few decorative accessories.

Light up the Holidays!

The days might be shorter, and the nights might be longer, but the warmth of the holiday season gives us the opportunity to light up the chilly winter nights! Here are some joyful displays of holiday merriment that are sure to spark your imagination and inspire your own light show. Enjoy!

Turn of the fountain and turn on the lights! This classy and modern display uses LED lights which use far less energy than traditional lights. I absolutely love the beautiful blue glow!

This Madrid street scene is sure to set your heart aglow with all the wonderment of the season. This arrangement on Calle Serrano was designed by architect Teresa Sapey to bring more excitement for the holidays in this busy shopping street.

The leaves may have fallen from the trees, but this gives the perfect opportunity to light them with new colors! Create your own festive forest with colored lights around your trees.

Lights aren't just for your land! I love the outlined lily pads!

It's a jungle out there! This fun and lively light display shows a myriad of holiday themes: all in one place! The lights 'striping' the trees is so fun!

Red and Green: Not just your Christmas-time Couple!

Red, meet Green. Green, meet Red.

When Christmas décor introduced these two colors, it was love at first sight, a match made in color heaven. However, this absolutely adorable couple wasn’t meant to be just a holiday fling- Green and Red are serious: they’re staying together year round, forever. That’s right; they’re in it for the long haul. Their story starts here: they sat across from each other on the basic color wheel, as what we learned in elementary art to be ‘complementary colors.’  But that was so long ago. Let’s fast forward to how Red and Green are hittin’ it off today in home décor in their many shades and variations. Enjoy!

Dare to fall deeply in love: The true green and deep red make a stark contrast against the white walls and floors of this dining area, but the charcoal grey table offsets these daring colors. Don’t be afraid to get deep!

The apple of my eye: this adorable combination of greens and reds is perfect for a child’s room! Play with different shades of green from the lightest to the brightest and from the shyest pinks to the boldest reds!

An earth-bound romance: Evergreen trees, poppies, green grass, red clay… the earth provides so many variations of red and green existing naturally in harmony: bring that natural balance into your home by displaying various greens and reds.

A modern love: Calming green paired with popping red offers lively energy to this modern living room. These colors set with bright white and streamlined designs create a clean, fresh, and fun environment in your home.

An eclectic embrace: This bohemian-style bedroom brings together many diverse shades, textures, and patterns that allows for green and red to stay together despite their differences.

Concrete Jungle Fever!

Caught the fever, yet? Be careful, it's contagious! Concrete can morph into just about anything- counter tops, tables, floors, benches. This unique material is environmentally sound, durable, and dynamic. Despite its hard and tough feel, it can be stained, polished, and sealed for a finished look. Concrete may seem intimidating, but he's not such a tough guy- just pair him with some soft goods such as linens or an over-sized club chair. That way, his tough edge gets taken off with a softer look. Haven't caught concrete jungle fever yet? Just take a look at these great designs. Enjoy

Sturdy and portable concrete tables- a simple, highly functional design.

Take a seat on concrete! This sculpture may not be as comfortable as your sofa, but it is much more fun!

Re-think your sink! Concrete can even be used in your bathroom.

This piece gives 'set the table' a whole new meaning!

So, celebrate the American way and fire up your grill, splash in your pool, and have yourself a BBQ- all without missing a thing! Many cooks often feel left out of all the fun- which is unfortunate since we all know the fun revolves around the food! With an outdoor kitchen, the cook is sure to still be part of the festivities and all the action, and everyone is sure to enjoy the convenience of an outdoor kitchen! Here are a few well designed outdoor kitchens perfect for any celebration. Enjoy!

Keep your kitchen in line with this streamlined mini fridge, sink, and grill!

Modern comforts of the great indoors- only, outdoors! This stainless steel kitchen even has a bar area perfect for serving company.

Everyone loves wide open spaces outdoors- the same goes for your outdoor kitchen! This kitchen is spacious because the design utilizes the corners and curves for full-function.

Heading to Bed

You just got home from a long, hard day of work. You're exhausted, and all you want to do is fall into bed and fly away to Dreamland. You look at your bed- a mattress on top of a measly metal bed frame. It's definitely not inviting you to Dreamland, is it? This can all change just by adding a creative headboard. Here are some inexpensive ways to bring a new design element into your bedroom that will invite you to head to bed and onward to Dreamland. Enjoy!

These doors are fresh, charming, and inviting! A perfect headboard for a cute, quaint room such as this one.

Open the doors to your wildest dreams! These vintage doors lend a rustic and chic feel to this bedroom complete with crystal chandelier and wooden furniture: what a perfect combination!

"I love being board!" If headboards could talk, am I right?! But seriously, this design is sweet, simple, and earthly-sound! I love seeing recycled materials used in creative ways!

You designed these? Oh, you're a natural! These natural wood panels give your room height yet add a cozy feel to the design of your room.

This ornate headboard is so intricate, inviting, and incredible! You'll have some interesting dreams, that's for sure!

Everyday Kitchens Made Sustainable!

Whether you are doing an entire kitchen overhaul or a few smaller upgrades you should keep in mind green design.  Weather its using a recycled material or energy efficient appliances...its a change for the better! These are some great designs and all use sustainable materials. Enjoy!

Bamboo is a wonderful product. Grows fast and is durable! Mix it with stainless and this kitchen has an instant modern feel. Also, open storage has become more appealing to homeowners since you have beautiful dinnerware why not show it off all the time? Perfect.

Love this! Would you ever think this was a sustainable kitchen? Probably not and that is the beauty of it. All the function and durability of a "typical" kitchen but highly stylish!

Would you ever know walking into this kitchen that it was designed as a "green" kitchen? Well concrete floors, quartz counter top make this home be just a little greener than its neighbor. Every little bit helps!

WOOD! This is from a house mainly designed out of wood......so naturally the kitchen presents lots of wood.  People sometimes forget wood can be sustainable and there are plenty of manufactures spreading the word and making sure the right practices are in place.  Since the wood comes from the right place and new trees are planted in the old ones place, this makes a nice green designed kitchen, and the addition of concrete counters adds to the design.

Bring the Outside in!

I love being in nature. Who doesn’t? The feeling of tranquility can’t be matched by man-made designs. I want to show you ways to bring the outside, inside so you can enjoy nature without leaving your home.
House plants are nice. They provide a little color and give you something to do when they need water. But how about an entire garden inside? I mean, why not? If you’re willing to have a handful of potted plants inside, it’s not that far off to include a garden with your interior.

Of course, planting indoors is more involved than buying a few potted plants at Home Depot, but the reward, feel and uniqueness are well worth the effort. Below are a few ideas that can be integrated into a well designed interior and bring color, life and a focal point to your space. Enjoy!
