Black, White and Red all over - Heights Modern Loft

This pair of empty nesters migrated south from Colorado to Texas and settled in the lovely historic Heights of Houston. With their human kids grown up and gone away (they still have two feline fur babies), they decided to downsize to a loft and upgrade to a more modern look. Lofts present some spacial challenges because they are small and relatively unstructured. In order to visually and functionally expand the space, design must be streamlined and free of clutter, with pieces strategically placed to add shape and form to the free flowing nature of many lofts. Ceilings that cap at fourteen feet definitely aid in opening up the area, and provide sufficient wall space for this couple's extensive art collection, but this tremendous downsize was still a challenge. See how we put their art on display, complemented by some old and new pieces of furniture, and gave their new home a modern, yet traditional and homey look.

Concrete floors and exposed brick can feel a bit cold and industrial, especially paired with the contrasting color combo of red, black, and white. In order to bring in some unifying warmth, we featured several walnut pieces throughout that blended the red-brown of the brick with the black pieces that accessorize their home.

Finding a place to sit in this living room is a nonissue. You can choose between the modern sofa bench, the pair of matching chairs, or the four red hot bar stools. To keep themselves and their fur babies happy, the couple needed to use comfy yet sturdy materials that they kitties could climb on and relax.

Speaking of seating, this modern sofa bench not only opens up the space by providing visual flow, but it also opens up the options of where to sit. The removable seat backs provide guests with endless possibilities to maximize (or even minimize!) their social interactions.

This may seem like a simple coffee table, but it is so, SO smart-- especially for this space. Though a unique shape, the triangular with rounded corners is perfectly positioned between the living room's available seating. The base faces the sofa and the other two sides face the matching chairs that seated at nearly the same angle. Still nothing can get in the way of guests chatting and gliding from space to space.

Just beyond the sofa is the dining area. Again, the sofa allows the living and dining 'rooms' to be brought together perfectly so guests can feel free to glide from space to space. Here is a great example how to blend traditional with modern: a refinished antique dining table and chairs offsets the cool edge of the modern pieces.

Perfect for parties, we equipped the dining area with a full bar cabinet to the left, and a sideboard storage to the right that can easily serve a buffet. This loft was designed for entertaining! However, the large windows may make some nosy neighbors jealous they weren't invited... Maybe next time, neighbors!

Enough talk about the furniture- let's move on to the art and accessories! When space is limited, its crucial that displayed items are always kept organized in a way that looks deliberate. Board games, books, religious symbols, family photos, and vases can all coexist on these floating shelves in a visually appealing manner because they're grouped by color and complemented by other items to be equal in height.

You can bet that I needed a ladder to install the artwork here. Tall ceilings are lovely, elegant, and elongating especially when the walls are adorned with art. This couple had a fairly extensive collection of pieces dear to them that they wanted to put on display. Even though they downsized, there was plenty of wall space to accommodate.

The paintings were continuous with the classic color scheme of red, black, and white featured in the furnishings, textiles, and other accessories. Fresh paintings subtly bring in more color to a space to make it overall more interesting.

Just to brag about these ceilings one more time, we had enough height to add not just one but TWO chandeliers! In a loft, this is a big deal. One in the living space and one in the dining area bring in just enough light to the rest of the room.

What a wonderful, fresh start for a new chapter in this couple's life together: a cool loft in a hip part of town, modern, and designed with entertaining in mind. They may be empty nesters, but their kids are sure to stop in for a visit (or maybe just a drink or two!).

Design Tip: Adding Accent Colors to a Neutral Palette

Color is a difficult thing for many people when designing a space. They know what they like just maybe not the right shade or don't know how much to use.  It is your home, so do what makes you happy but for those of you who don't know exactly how to pull together a space with what makes you happy, here are some pointers! Enjoy!

Let there be one dominate accent color. Lots of blue on the wall and a single object in red.

Don't want too much color? Try a neutral palette with a few pieces in a bright colors. Also this makes it easy to change your color scheme when you feel the need.

Bright white is always a great choice when adding really bold colors in a room. It lets the accents speak up.

Want to use more than two colors? Of course you can!  Make sure they have enough contrast and are given a neutral background.

Bold wallpaper is always a great way to introduce a color. Make sure to leave the rest of the room neutral enough so the wallpaper is the focus and nothing will compete with it.

The Modern Bedroom

Ah....the bedroom. The place where you retire at night, read in bed, snuggle with your partner and of course sleep. Bedrooms should be a relaxing and clutter-free space, so when you wake up to start your day you feel refreshed and happy! Being an interior designer, I sometimes get asked to design a bedroom or two. This is always fun for me! Bedrooms usually consist of lots of textiles and soft materials which can make your room have that cozy, curl up feeling. A client of mine had seen a previous bedroom I designed on my website and was so happy to find a designer that didn't just add "stuff" to a room to fill voids. Empty space can be beautiful and should be in every room. It gives your eyes a resting place and can make a space look larger than it really is. Below are a few bedrooms I designed with a somewhat minimalist approach. Enjoy!

Color of 2013: Emerald Green

Green has always been a favorite color of mine. I have green eyes which I think was when I first fell in love with green! Although my eyes are emerald green....they are still green! :)
Rich, saturated colors are so bold and make such a statement in a space. Please are naturally drawn to eye-catching things(such as bright colors) and it stimulates the brain and makes people think! That is how I feel about interiors, in my designs I always have elements that standout on purpose! It creates more interest and keep people in that space longer usually. Well I have yet to use emerald this year in my designs but I am sure it will be used soon with all these beautiful examples of the hue! Enjoy!

Oh my! These tiles are gorgeous! A stunning use of the color, but make sure you are going to still love it for years to come. They even used the tiles in a vertical and horizontal pattern which gives it more of a modern look!

Love the color but not sure where to bring it in to your space? Well a great way is in a small accent piece, such as a nightstand. Mix it with other patterns and colors for a mixed look!

Want a quick fix for a bland room? Pillows are a great inexpensive way to bring in color. Whether you change your pillows for the season or every year or so this is a great way to keep your home looking fresh!

Paint, the other quick fix for adding color. Keeping your furniture neutral is a great way to add accents elsewhere in the room. Like the wall for instance, and a can of paint makes a statement and is easy on the wallet!

Bathrooms look great in white but sometimes white can be lonely, which is why a friend is nice to bring in.  Here the emerald is paired nicely with the crisp white on the walls and a few decorative accessories.

For the Love of Chairs!

I have an affinity for accent chairs. My all time favorite being the Eames Lounge Chair and the Barcelona, but we’ll get to those later. In my searches I’ve came across some bright and fun examples I had to share with you. Vintage modern is how I would describe my style if I had to and these just feel right to me. Enjoy!

Minimalist and happy. I feel like I can breathe. Cozy seating areas prevent clutter and make for a good chance to chat or enjoy a drink. I just can’t get enough of that turquoise.

Don’t be afraid to give new life to an old friend. Refinishing and recovering a chair is a nice way to retain the sentimental value and create a fresh look. I frequent antique and resale shops, on the hunt for a piece that can be had cheap and customized just for me.

Now this is eye catching! A relatively simple chair covered with a memorable fabric is what an accent chair should be. This is a great addition to neutral components and can add some life to your space.

The choice of turquoise doesn’t hurt my love for this look. Two similar chairs covered in the same fabric create a fun effect, providing unity while maintaining an eclectic and composed look.

These beautiful Danish modern chairs have been recovered, providing an updated look.

If you have a piece of furniture you have given new life to...we would love you to share with us! Got a design idea but not sure how to accomplish what you desire? Let us know we will be glad to help.

Kitchen Facelift!

Out of all the rooms in a house the kitchen is where we spend most of our money. The fixtures, cabinetry, finishes and appliances all add up quickly. Along with being a high traffic area, the kitchen is a gathering place. Since man discovered fire, the area where we prepare our meals (think sitting around a fire) has been the heart of our daily life.  I enjoy a fresh look. Who doesn’t? Here are some inexpensive ways to give your kitchen a renewed look.  Enjoy!

In case you can’t tell, I love color. For a rewarding change, opt to repaint your cabinetry. A simple,
cheap color change can yield substantial results.

An often overlooked and understated option is to explore different pulls and knobs. A nice stainless or brushed look can compliment stainless appliances in a kitchen. Combine a new set of pulls with a new color
and you can create a whole new look.

Another great use of color can come through in a backsplash. This multicolor backsplash array brings a touch of life to an otherwise bland space. Remember, these options don’t have to be expensive to make an impact.

The last option, albeit more expensive (but still inexpensive should you DIY), is to reface your cabinets.
This is a great option for a quick kitchen update, which like I said is a necessity, and can make a huge
difference in the overall feel of the space.

Don't waste that space!

A frequently neglected area of a home is the hallway. A typical hallway or staircase can encompass a good portion of a home’s livable space and often aren’t used to their full potential. Hallways or corridors don’t have to be devoid of emotion; a simple, practical approach can add an extra personal touch.

A bolder approach, should the above example bore you, is to create a more eclectic look by using
mixed and matched frames. The matching lamp and walls create a more put together feel, while the
dominating horizontal white and black lines maintain some structure.

Choosing an eye catching color to apply to the walls brings a unique feeling to the space. A bold color
requires minimal additions, which help this bright chartreuse be the center of attention.
If you have the option I love the idea of being a little more creative and making a lasting impression.
You can create a huge effect with either paint or by applying a custom or ready made piece of vinyl.
LTLprints.com has a huge selection to choose from and you can even create your own. Whether you
choose paint or a print, both are easy to change if you get bored.

A more traditional approach is to apply photography. I like the idea, however I like to apply a personal touch that makes the space pop. The example above uses identical frames, with a simple white matte, centered at eye level. The clean lines and organized appearance allows a larger number of pictures to be displayed
without being overwhelming.

Little cost, BIG effect!

A little bit of COLOR can add a lot to a space!  A simple change brightens a room, pull components together and makes a statement all at once.  These are few rooms that I think are good examples of transforming a room just by painting the walls.  If you have been hesitant to paint your walls...relax...its just paint!  Enjoy!

A soothing shade of blue will help create a serene and relaxing look. This bathroom
appears inviting and cozy while the white tones make you feel fresh and clean.

Orange is a bold accent choice, but applied in the correct way and hue, can be very elegant.  The design of this room is calm and classic but the color orange brings life to a space that may have other wise been dull.  This examplebrings your attention to the fireplace while maintaining a simple and clean look.

Classic Black and White...but wait....add a vivid green to the walls and POW, its become THE accessory in the room.  And if you get bored with the green (or any color for that matter) just paint again! It is an inexpensive way to make a big statement.

Yellow and grey walls bring your attention up and allow the use of lighter colors in the rest of the room providing a more open feel.  Also, since the yellow is on the headboard wall, it wont be too bright for your eyes when you decide to rise and shine.
