Kitchen Design Tips to Consider

So you have been dreaming about your less than inspiring kitchen you cook in daily. The time has finally come to make that dream kitchen come to life and join you and your home together again!

A kitchen is much more than a pretty space to look at. It is first and foremost about function. That's right, it can look gorgeous and by all means make you feel happy when you are in there but there are design elements that go deeper than just the pattern of your backsplash tile.

Layout - the floorplan, the footprint and how you walk and stand in the space is important. Do you have a weird existing layout you have been "just living with" for years?  Or that galley kitchen that could have a second entrance into the kitchen or pull the peninsula away from the wall to make room for a fully functioning island you have always wanted?

Maybe these are issues in your kitchen we need to address or at least think about in your new design.

Perhaps there are too many entrances into your kitchen from more than 3 rooms, maybe the previous homeowner wanted to knock down as many walls as possible forgetting that sometimes you do need walls for elements like a tall pantry cabinet with fully extending interior drawers to see can you have available not just the ones in the front of the shelf.

Open Shelves, Glass Doors or Closed Cabinets - Lately we have all see the lovely photos of kitchen with open shelving. While this is a great idea to give the space a lighter more open space while still giving you storage, it also opens some people open to collect clutter. I have always said if there is a surface some one will put as much as they can on that surface because it us there to be used. This all depends on the individual, some people prone to do this others are not so the amount of open shelves should be considered based on what works for your storage needs.

All the Cabinets - More isn't always better. More efficient is. That 16 foot span of wall cabinets may not be needed if we utilized the base cabinets to be more efficient with deep drawers or pull outs for specialty appliances. Having a home for everything you need to access in the kitchen is the most important thing. if you have 3 crock-pots and want to keep them all, we need to find a home for all those in the new design.

Materials - Easy to clean. That is my first priority in a kitchen. Everyone who cooks can be messy at some point. Oh you really like that white carrara marble but use turmeric (stains a lot of materials even if sealed) a lot in your cooking? That is probably not the best material for you then. Using a material like quartz or something that achieves the look you want but also giving you the functional counter so you don't worry about the bottle of red wine you left on the counter and left a ring that you cant get out easily.

These are just a few things to consider when thinking of remodeling a kitchen. A designer should be able to guide you in making the best decisions for your kitchen you are planning to spend a decent amount of money on. We want it to last for years so selections are important as far as quality, function and aesthetics.

Spring Cleaning Tips 2013

Its about that time! Flowers start to bloom and outdoor activities are planned. But what about the inside of your home? Does it need a little sprucing up? Organize that area you have been talking about for the past 3 months? You don't have to spend a lot (or if any) to make an impact on your organization around the home! Here are some tips that can help you get inspired or perhaps make it happen sooner than you expected! Enjoy!

The number one place that people usually start with in their spring cleaning journey is the closet! It is usually the most area in need since it gets used everyday! Go through and try on everything and decide if you still like it, looks good on your or if you need to pass it along to someone else who could put it to good use. Once the items you no longer want/need are gone organize the rest and hang clothes on the same type of hangers for a cohesive look.

Messy box of wrapping materials get you stressed? Well think about hanging your ribbon spools and other accessories on a multiple pan hanger and a jewelry pouch hanger. New uses for common items!

Free storage containers!!! Made spaghetti last night? Use that jar for storing dry goods that usually come in a bag. This will keep them fresher and make better use of your pantry shelf space.

Some pantries don't come with ample storage for spices or other small food items but making use of dead wall space is perfect for small spice racks attached to the wall! Inexpensive and easy to do-it-yourself! Hooray for having everything visible and easy to find!

Tips For Organizing Your Home: 2013

Happy New Year! As everyone plans their new year's resolutions not to eat cake or workout more but don't neglect your home from getting a new look or just a little TLC to make your new year even easier with a clutter free home! I might be a little OCD (in a good way) but January if the perfect month to begin your home organization transformation.  It's cold outside, perfect for staying inside where it is warm and easy to get things done around the house! I have begun on my home already but still have a little ways to go. Thought this would be the perfect time to share some of my ideas and tips that you can use in your own home! Enjoy!

You know those free metal hangers you get from the dry cleaners? Well there is a reason they are free.....they aren't good for your clothes, chose one kind either wood or plastic and go with it through your entire closet. One, it will more organized, and two, it will keep your clothes looking better.

An easy fix for a lack of storage in a home office wall shelves. They are inexpensive and will give you more storage than you thought was possible. Make sore to get ones sturdy enough to hold what you need to place on the shelves. Heavier items might not do as well on a floating shelf.

Use matching storage boxes to create a calm working environment. Also keeps the mess hidden and your work area looking fabulous!

Don't have a separate room for your home office? Make sure whatever room your desk is in, it blends well with the decor in that room. Use the same colors or same materials to make it feel like part of the room and not like a sad desk stuck in the corner!

Boxes are always good storage options. Why not put a picture of that box's content on the outside. This is an easy way to remember where things are with out having to use a label maker!

The Junk Drawer...everyone has one, take time to go through it and put items in there correct homes then get a few organizers for the remaining items and TADA! No more "junk drawer"!

It is cold season which means the flu is in the air! This is a great time to go through your medicines and throw out the expired ones and organize the rest! clear containers work great!

Cool Off This Summer with New Hot Tile!

Tile is a great way to being in texture and color into a bathroom, kitchen or really any space for that matter.  These are some cool tiles that are sure to make your space heat up! With so many options for tiles who would want to be ordinary? Pick something that represents you and your style.  Enjoy!

These tiles remind me of tetris! Simple color with various thicknesses to give lots of depth to what would normally be a boring flat wall.

Geometry is one of my favorites. These slightly varied shades give the illusion of 3 dimensions.

Stainless crosses wow! Alternating between polished and matte finishes gives depth to a wall.

A city map on a wall?! Genus! I definitely want this.

How about a plain white tile with the most texture you can think of. These horizontal tiles do just that! Or if you aren't into lines how about these hex shaped tiles angled various ways for added texture!

10 Kitchen Design Tips

Everyone dreams of their perfect kitchen, and whenever that time comes to make it happen you need to make sure everything has been thought through down to the smallest detail.  Kitchen renovations can be stressful if you are not prepared for it or if you try to take on too much by yourself without consulting a professional.  These are some key things that should be considered before taking on a major kitchen renovation alone.

1. Unique Flooring

If you decide to go with a neutral palette and solid colors a bold floor is a great option to bring in interest. Here, classic black and white share the stage and create a truly unique floor.

2. Integrated Appliances

Starting from "scratch" on a kitchen is the perfect opportunity to give yourself maximum storage and function.  Integrated fridge drawers for the kids or dishwasher drawers so you can wash a partial load these ideas can make or break your everyday tasks if you don't consider them. Also, disguising them with your cabinet face gives your kitchen a seamless look.

3. Update Cabinets

So you kitchen has the function you need, but its just outdated. Refinishing your existing cabinets can be a huge cost saver and frees up your budget for other key elements you want in your dream kitchen.

4. Hardware

Using finger pulls instead of decorative pulls creates a more streamline look.

5. Use a Similar Color

Bring other colors from adjacent rooms to make your new and improved kitchen flow with the rest of the house. Kind of like it has always been there!

6. Durable Solutions

In a hard working kitchen durable surfaces are important.  Countertops are one of the most because they get the most abuse. So make sure you pick a material like quartz, concrete or stainless for a longer lasting counter.

7. Open Up Your Space

Ever had the chance to knock down a wall? Its a great feeling, like a therapy session or anger management at home! Also makes for a closer family or better entertaining space. Even though square footage wasn't added your home will feel bigger.

8. The Social Island

The kitchen is the heart of the home, right? Well at least that's where everyone migrates to. Creating ample seating for others to hang out with the chef is always good. It allows you to still be apart of the action and a comfortable place for others to sit.

9. Creative Backspash

There are so many options for backsplashes now so why not take advantage of them?  This one shows irregular shaped stainless tiles. They are just as simple to install as sheeted mosaic tiles but are more interesting.

10. Mix It Up

Two tone cabinetry is a great way to introduce another color into your kitchen as well as create some interest instead of having a sea of one color cabinetry.

Everyone loves wide open spaces outdoors- the same goes for your outdoor kitchen! This kitchen is spacious because the design utilizes the corners and curves for full-function.

Everyday Kitchens Made Sustainable!

Whether you are doing an entire kitchen overhaul or a few smaller upgrades you should keep in mind green design.  Weather its using a recycled material or energy efficient appliances...its a change for the better! These are some great designs and all use sustainable materials. Enjoy!

Bamboo is a wonderful product. Grows fast and is durable! Mix it with stainless and this kitchen has an instant modern feel. Also, open storage has become more appealing to homeowners since you have beautiful dinnerware why not show it off all the time? Perfect.

Love this! Would you ever think this was a sustainable kitchen? Probably not and that is the beauty of it. All the function and durability of a "typical" kitchen but highly stylish!

Would you ever know walking into this kitchen that it was designed as a "green" kitchen? Well concrete floors, quartz counter top make this home be just a little greener than its neighbor. Every little bit helps!

WOOD! This is from a house mainly designed out of wood......so naturally the kitchen presents lots of wood.  People sometimes forget wood can be sustainable and there are plenty of manufactures spreading the word and making sure the right practices are in place.  Since the wood comes from the right place and new trees are planted in the old ones place, this makes a nice green designed kitchen, and the addition of concrete counters adds to the design.

Organize That Kitchen!

Kitchens see the most traffic and use of any of the rooms in your home. So, obviously, it would serve you best if your kitchen were organized with enough storage space. When you take the plunge and tackle a full kitchen renovation, keep every detail in mind. Sure, include lots of cabinets. But spend some time and really think through how little details can make your new kitchen yours. Here are a few ideas I’ve come across and fell in love with. Enjoy.

Don’t be afraid to use hooks for storage if you find yourself short on cabinet real estate. Include a colored wall to liven up your space.

Do you have limited counter space and or don’t want to display your fifteen appliances all the time? A swinging or sliding shelf is a great way to allow use or access without having to drag a heavy mixer from a cabinet the few times you actually use it.

Those sponges that are so ugly now have a convenient hiding spot!  Stainless is always a great material for the kitchen too! easy to clean doesn't rust and looks great!

Underneath most sinks is a pile of cleaning supplies. I love this idea as a way to organize and again allow access to the entirety of the space. Installing a “U” shaped drawer will help you keep this nice and neat.

Finding a way to use otherwise wasted space is a necessity in some kitchens. By installing a toe-kick drawer you can store flat items that you may not use often.

I’ve always hated corner cabinets since my reach is limited. I basically have to crawl into the thing to get items from the back. Very inconvenient to store stuff you use often. These are a fantastic solution as they allow access and visibility to everything.
