The Modern Bedroom

Ah....the bedroom. The place where you retire at night, read in bed, snuggle with your partner and of course sleep. Bedrooms should be a relaxing and clutter-free space, so when you wake up to start your day you feel refreshed and happy! Being an interior designer, I sometimes get asked to design a bedroom or two. This is always fun for me! Bedrooms usually consist of lots of textiles and soft materials which can make your room have that cozy, curl up feeling. A client of mine had seen a previous bedroom I designed on my website and was so happy to find a designer that didn't just add "stuff" to a room to fill voids. Empty space can be beautiful and should be in every room. It gives your eyes a resting place and can make a space look larger than it really is. Below are a few bedrooms I designed with a somewhat minimalist approach. Enjoy!

Clean it Up: Bathroom Edition

A Bathroom is usually where you start your morning once you get the energy to roll out of your comfy bed. Bathrooms are especially important because it gets used everyday. Functionality in this space is crucial and they best way to get the most of our your bathroom is to evaluate your routine. How many people are using it, what times and the order of tasks you go through each morning. These particular bathrooms below are all crisp and clean in white. This can be very relaxing in the morning and keep you calm, rather than stressed.  Some may think an all white bathroom is boring but with the right textures and some lacquer finishes you can create interest without having to introduce any other colors! Let the form of the bathroom fixtures make create the interest. Take a look and let us know what you think! Enjoy!

Tiling the wall all the way to the ceiling is a great way to give your bathroom more height and with a hot shower your walls won't be sweating they moisture will just run right off.

Windows at the ceiling line brings in lots of light without sacrificing privacy. Even in the shower you can have a window!

White Shelves and white accessories make this white bathroom even whiter! Little hints of stainless steel break up the all white bathroom.

The flooring is amazing! Small flat stones give a much needed texture and natural pattern for a white bathroom.

Reflective surfaces like mirrors and glass let the light bounce around the space, making it appear as if there is more light than there really is.

Baby, It's Cold Outside!

No more excuses to leave: there is nothing cozier than admiring the beauty of snowcapped mountains and powdery snow on the ground from the comfort of your own home. Whether it's your winter holiday home or a getaway cabin in the woods, be sure to appreciate your place. Wherever you are in this winter season, remember to bring the beauty of the outside in, while keeping out the cold and taking in the warmth! Enjoy!

If eyes are the windows to the soul, then windows are eyes to the outside: where the extension of your home is. Bring more of the outside in by lining your walls with rich wood as seen in this stairwell. I love the cascading string of light-orbs: it's like stars in the night sky!

This children's bedroom is complete with the rich wood and large windows like we have shown before, but notice the plush white rug: it's just like snow on the ground! Perfect for kids play!

Gotta love these earthy tones! The beige, natural wood, and accents of fall colors offer the perfect interior to admire the exquisite environment just outside your home. The brown carpet is even reminiscent of soil in the winter softly speckled with snowflakes.

Not much else is really needed with a breathtaking view like that! This kitchen's best asset is the large, open windows displaying the majestic range. However, accents like the natural wooden cabinets and the glacier-like marble countertops lend an arctic feel to this streamlined kitchen.
Dining in December: bright white snow and darker tones of winter nights. A perfect combination for your winter holiday dinners!

Need More Space? Finish Out your Attic!

Most houses have an attic. Some attics are big enough to make it usable square footage and add a room or a rent-able apartment. These are some great ideas for finishing out your attic and gaining more space in your existing home. Enjoy!

Make a private office, somewhere you can concentrate and ideas can come to life.

How about an extra living space? Or a place for your teenagers to hangout with their friends and not disturb the parents.

An extra bedroom comes in handy for the holidays or a for a growing family.

Make a profit on your extra square footage! If your neighborhood allows you to have a multi-family home then add an attic apartment!

This attic apartment feels less like an apartment and more like a loft! It is an open concept and lets you be imaginative with how to layout your space.

Decked OUT!

No matter what region you live in there is something to be said for having a deck of your own. Need to tear out your old broken one or maybe your home never had one? Now is the time to build your dream deck!  Spend some time this summer with BBQs, pool parties, or just livin' easy out on the deck.  Here are some ideas on how to get decked out this summer. Enjoy!

Enjoy the view without anything blocking it! Except glass, of course... just remember it's there.

Try to focus on the deck here, people! This view is breathtaking, complimented by a cozy and nearly camouflaged deck designed for optimal comfort.

This deck is sleek and sexy- perfect for the sunbathers!

This deck is incredibly spacious! I love the checker-patterned wood floor. Also, this home has a sun room: great for admiring the outdoors while still inside.

Step out on the deck and into the pool! This modern deck flows so well and the Palm Tree Island is a perfect touch.

Many levels, many opportunities! Instead of having one floor, this multi-level deck subtly designates areas for different activities.

Decked out on the water! I've always wanted my own island... ;)

Loft: Living the High Life.

Lofts are my favorite! You can layout your home in many different ways. I used to live in one with vaulted ceilings and exposed duct work and of course no walls! But you may wonder how does exposed brick and duct work, lack of doors, and open empty space sound like 'home' to anyone? If you're wondering the same thing, I can assure you that loft living can be lofty living- all it takes is some furniture and accessories to turn a cold, empty room into a warm, welcoming home! Here are some great ideas to inspire your loft. Enjoy!

Living lofty, sky high! The skylights and white walls make this loft bright and warm while visually expanding the space.

Is this a city loft of a village cottage? The wooden furniture and exposed brick remind me of a hearth: very homey!

Living lofty: scholar style! Take advantage of the height and display your book collection (easily accessed via ladder!).

Wide open space! Lucky for this loft there are columns to visually separate the space and define different areas for living and dining!

Notice the ceiling they embraced it by mimicking the lines with shelves. And of course I love the exposed brick!

Color your loft, brighten your world!  In a neutral space bright furniture brings a sense of home to a cold space.

Let There Be Light!

Ever been in a room with no natural light or windows? If so, you can definitely feel something is missing: natural light. I've lived in rooms without a window and it was... different, to say the least (ok, and maybe a tad bleak). I cannot stress how crucial windows are in making your space feel cleaner, cozier, and just plain happier! So, if you have windows, let that natural light shine in! The best window coverings are solar shades; they practically disappear when pulled up. You can always add curtains to any window for some shade and style. Want to see some examples of few fantastic rooms with perfect natural light? Keep reading ;)

Light + white = bright! This window lets in the natural light which reflects off the white surfaces and makes the room feel fresh, spacious, and open.

Old world charm with modern world flair. This window embraces the history of the building while achieving a modern feel thanks to new fixtures.

With windows like this, no one would ever suspect that this is an attic apartment. Yes, even an attic can have plenty of natural light.

Cool natural light and hot poppin' furniture: the perfect complement.

What a beautifully picturesque scene! This window makes you forget you're even inside.

These solar shades are on double-duty. These sleek window coverings not only block out light, but they also block out heat. You're welcome, energy bill.
